Kart drivers rev up season

KARTING: Barely a month has elapsed, but the new karting season is set to start.

On Saturday the Formula K Kart Club begin its program for 2010 with a day/night meeting at Fitzroy Park Raceway.

Publicity officer Kevin Doherty said despite the old season having barely finished, members are itching to get back on the track to test each other out once again.

“We have a few new members and this will be their first meeting,” Doherty said.

During 2009 the popularity of the sport increased, resulting in people buying karts.

Many of these newcomers have attended practice sessions, but Saturday will be their first competitive meeting.

That is not the case for the karters of the Smartcity Racing team led by Matthew Dicinoski.

There are changes, however, with Dicinoski now being challenged in the Leopard Heavy category by team-mate Scott Dagan.

Due to a change of weight classifications between the categories of racers Dagan has been forced into the change.

The Smartcity team has not changed in personnel for the new season and its number still stands at three with Mark “Chooky” Edwards still making his way through the ranks after a successful 2009 season.

Dicinoski said the team had made plans for 2010 with an eye on the Queensland Leopard Series and the State Championships.

Racing begins at 4pm.
