AN elderly woman seriously assaulted in Rockhampton this morning is in a critical condition in hospital.

The 81-year-old was found in the front yard of a George Street residence about 8.30am.

Rockhampton Detective Inspector Jon Wacker has addressed a media conference this afternoon.

A police manhunt was under way this morning after reports the woman was covered in a white powder which may have come from a fire extinguisher, possibly used in the attack.
