Automatic flood cover advised for Qld

Automatic flood cover advised for QldRECENT tsunami warnings keep water and flood damage top of mind on Queensland’s coast, while unpredictable storms and floods again threaten the interior.

ALL 18 gates of the mighty Fitzroy River barrage remained open yesterday.

Rockhampton Regional Council confirmed that as of 1pm yesterday two gates were open 1.5m with the remaining 16 open at 2.1 metres.

On Tuesday three gates were fully open with the others at 2.1 metres.

Council said most of the flow was local runoff.

The flow was yesterday around the same as Tuesday where 114,000 megalitres a day was flowing through and the water level at the barrage was 3.71 metres.

Due to rainfall inland from Mackay it is expected that 327,000 megalitres will flow down the river next week pushing the river height at the barrage to about 5.7 metres.

It will take one week for that water to reach Rockhampton and it is dependent on what further rain we get and how much will divert to other creeks.

Rockhampton’s annual water allocation is 50,000 megalitres.

In 2009 the city consumed 20,000 megalitres.
