Michael Simmers in action.
The cricketing career of Michael Simmers keeps reaching new heights.
The free-scoring top-order batsman has shone in local club cricket, excelled on the Central Queensland representative scene and is now making his mark with the Queensland Bulls under-23 side.
Simmers was called into the team recently for the match in Perth against Western Australia, making a start with the bat in the first innings, but then failing, as did his team-mates, in the second knock.
The teenager must have showed enough in that outing to give selectors encouragement as he retained his position in the team for the match this week at Allan Border Field against New South Wales.
Again he made a significant contribution, scoring a half-century in the first innings, but falling cheaply in the second.
His club captain, Frenchville’s Todd Wells, was thrilled with Simmers’ contribution for the state side, pointing out that he was not the only Frenchville man to put his hand up.
“Preston White top-scored with 59 and they shared a 100-run partnership,” Wells reported.
Unfortunately that was one of the few high points for Queensland, as New South Wales dominated the game with both bat and ball.
“The good thing is he is not out of his depth,” Wells added.
This weekend’s representative clash, the Central Queensland final between Rockhampton and Central Highlands will now be played on February 21 at the Rockhampton Cricket Ground.
