A NEW floating concrete walkway will be built adjacent to the Rockhampton riverbank boat ramp for the benefit of river users, Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten announced yesterday.

Mr Schwarten, the Member for Rockhampton, said the $630,000 floating walkway would make it easier for people using the boat ramp as well as providing space for short-term access for tenders from yachts.

“The Queensland Government undertook a $16.5 million redevelopment of the banks of the Fitzroy River to open up more public space to all kinds of activity, including boating,” he said.

“The Fitzroy River has always been one of the chief attractions of the city and redevelopment has made it even more attractive and accessible on both banks.

“As part of Stage 2 development works, construction of a $1.72 million boat ramp commenced in October last year.”

He said recent rains had delayed the project, but workers were “pulling out all the stops” to have it open by Easter.

“The ramp, located in the city reach of the Fitzroy, will provide small boats with temporary access to services and tourist attractions within the Rockhampton CBD,” Mr Schwarten said.

“The addition of the floating walkway will further enhance the amenity of the boat ramp and provide space for short-term access for yachtsmen’s tenders.”

The floating walkway would be built by Olimar Pty Ltd.

Mr Schwarten said the design of the boat ramp and walkway took into account the significant tidal variations of the Fitzroy River.

“The mighty Fitzroy has posed a few challenges for this project in that it has a tidal variation of up to six metres and is prone to flooding.”

The Stage 2 works of the Rockhampton Riverbank Project also include a new amenities block, upgraded car parking, a third fishing jetty, basketball court upgrade and shade structures to the play area.

The Rockhampton Riverbank Redevelopment is managed by the Department of Public Works in close consultation and co-operation with Rockhampton Regional Council.
