Help offered to flood-hit Queensland

HEAVY rain and floods across Queensland have created so much damage that disaster relief funding is now being offered to 60 per cent of councils.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts has added six councils to the list of those eligible for assistance, including Gold Coast, which was hit hard with floods at the weekend.

The others are Banana, Bulloo, Logan, Quilpie and Scenic Rim.

Joint state and federal disaster relief arrangements are now in place for 44 councils across the state.

"These arrangements are now activated in 60 per cent of Queensland's 73 local government areas," Mr Roberts said.

"Communities in much of Queensland have been seriously impacted by heavy rain, associated flooding and damaging winds as a result of recent severe conditions and tropical cyclones Neville and Olga.

"Preliminary estimates of damage are around $102 million to date, and will continue to be assessed."
