IN LOVE: Krissa and Dale Welfare walk under an arch of swords and flowers leading to a besom to represent a threshold into their married life together.
A CAULDRON was lit, water was poured into a chalice and the bride looked like a medieval princess.
Rockhampton's Krissa and Dale Welfare tied the knot in The Cathedral Cave on Valentine's Day yesterday with a unique medieval-themed ceremony.
The religion of medieval times was tied into the ritual through worshiping each element of nature – fire, water, earth and air.
A cauldron was lit to represent fire, water was poured into a chalice to represent water, salt and dirt represented earth and a gong was hit to represent the air.
Everyone was dressed in authentic medieval attire. All the men had swords and the women had flowers, which they used as a guard of honour for the newlyweds to walk through.
A sand ceremony was held to join Krissa and Dale's families together. Different-coloured sands were poured into a decanter and when the sands met, it symbolised the families never parting.
Krissa, who planned her wedding right down to a castle wedding cake during the past 12 months, said she and Dale wanted a special and different ceremony to bring their two families together.
“I wanted to get married on Valentine's Day because it's a special day for us; we have always celebrated it and I don't ever want to forget our anniversary,” Krissa said.
During the ceremony Krissa, 33, and Dale, 41, ate chocolate to incorporate the medieval belief that the first thing newly weds try as a couple is something sweet to represent a sweet marriage.
At the end of the service they stepped over a besom (like a broomstick) to represent a threshold into their married life together.
