AFTER spending more than two years planning her big event, Mandy Fox was quite happy to trash her wedding dress on her wedding day.

And it was all because of a photograph she saw in a bridal magazine – and the fact she only paid $100 for the dress.

Actually, Mandy, of Blackwater, said the whole wedding cost less than $2000.

Mandy was one of an increasing number of brides who are prepared to get down and dirty in their dresses in a “trash the dress” photo session, posing in water and covering themselves in dirt, in the name of photographic art.

While most brides do the fashion shoots weeks after the wedding, Mandy instead chose to do it on her special day.

“I figure, for the amazing photos, why not?” Mandy said.

“It was too hot to wear the dress all day anyway.”

Mandy and her husband Allan were married at the Island View Caravan Park, Kinka Beach, on February 13, and their photos, including some more traditional ones, were taken on the beachfront and around the Capricorn Coast.

She said photos taken of the couple waist deep in water then covered in mud attracted quite a few curious onlookers.

“I look at the photos now and can't believe it was me.

“I absolutely love them.”

Photographer Orin Lucke from Blink Photography said he'd had plenty of requests for brides to do a “trash the dress” photo session but Mandy was the first he had photographed.

“It is a great way to forget the glitz and glamour of the wedding day and let your hair down,” Orin said.

He predicts the style of photographs would become more popular in the region as brides seek something a little bit different for their albums.

“They want a unique experience and something to reflect their personality.”

After the photo session Mandy changed into another dress, “a lot cooler”, similar to the bridesmaids, for their barbecue reception, with cupcakes for the wedding cake.

For brides out there wondering how Mandy achieved the wedding of her dreams for less than $2000, the answer is eBay.

“It was everything we wanted it to be.”

Mandy had been looking at bridal boutiques initially, but thought as she was only going to wear the dress once she would save her money for other things and get an eBay bargain, and then followed with the rest of the wedding list.

“Recession eat your heart out.”
