Frenchville batsman Michael Simmers slams a boundary.
CRICKET: Frenchville top-order batsman Trent Kenny was the hero for the Falcons with an undefeated century against Norths Tigers at Rockhampton Cricket Ground on Saturday.
It was the first day of the two-day match between the teams and Frenchville, thanks to Kenny, took a stranglehold by scoring 341.
The Falcons batted their full allocation, with Kenny at the crease for much of the day.
Kenny scored an impressive 164 runs, including 20 boundaries and two sixes, from 228 balls.
The stylish batsman went to the wicket when Brendan Handley was out for 10 with his team’s total just 12.
There were a number of willing assistants for Kenny along the way, with Brent Rothery scoring a handy 43, Todd Wells a lively 32 and Brock Siegert 44 runs from 69 balls.
None of Norths’ bowlers had impressive figures. Greg Sorrensen was the best with 2-61, while Adam Matthews was tidy in taking 1-48 from his 16 overs.
Even if there is little change in the wicket during the week it will take a massive effort if the Norths batsmen are to overtake the Falcons total.
“At 5-39 I thought I may have made an error,” Gracemere captain Michael Harth said, summing up his decision to bat in the match against Brothers Southside.
The Gracemere top order was destroyed as the Brothers bowlers extracted a little out of the track and the Gracemere batsmen were guilty of poor shot selection.
However, in the Gracemere middle order there is the competition’s in-form player in Aaron Harmsworth, who joined his captain to put on 85 runs and give the team a chance of posting a reasonable target.
Harmsworth scored another half-century before being dismissed for 56 runs, while Harth scored 36.
The Gracemere tail dug in, with Trent Raguse scoring 25, Ben Milne 18, Rhys Philp 21 and Bob McQuire 12 not out.
However, even Harth was prepared to admit the target his team set was not a big one.
“We got a score below-par,” he said.
With Gracemere all out, Brothers had a tricky 14 overs to play out until stumps.
Enter young pace bowler Ben Milne.
In the space of seven hostile overs Milne had five of Brothers top order back in the shed with a great exhibition of seam bowling.
Harth said even experienced batsmen were dismissed without playing a shot as Milne got movement off the track.
By stumps Brothers were 5-31. However, Harth was taking nothing for granted, with Gracemere having been in an almost identical situation.
