Mascots join star players on field

WALKING out in front of a big crowd in national colours is the dream of many young footballers.

Rockhampton region boys Callum Muir and Lachlan and Jordan Griffiths got their chance early as mascots during last week’s Asian Cup Qualifier between Australia and Indonesia at Suncorp Stadium.

The boys won the chance from an internet competition, and got to walk out with the sides for the national anthems.

Callum was paired up with Australia striker Josh Kennedy while Lachlan and Jordan accompanied the Indonesian captain and goalkeeper respectively.

Ten-year-old Callum, who plays as a goalkeeper for Capricorn Coast, said the experience was a little nerve-wracking.

“I was pretty nervous, as I knew there were lots of people in the stadium. But at the same time I was really excited,” he said.

He said the best part of the experience was running on.

“The tension rose and everyone in the crowd was yelling and banging.”

Lachlan and Jordan’s mother Nikki said the boys loved being given the chance to meet the players.

“They really enjoyed the experience,” she said.

“They got to talk to the players and got all their signatures.”

The boys got to keep their strips, and enjoyed the game itself.

“It was good, especially when Mark Milligan scored. It was so fun, everyone was cheering and jumping around,” Callum said.
