Guy steps into the breach

GUY Williams is one footballer who could never be accused of not playing for the team.

Renowned second-rower Guy Williams will play for the Central Comets on Saturday night.

GUY Williams is one footballer who could never be accused of not playing for the team.

On the park he and brother Dallas are reliable players whose unselfish work helps team-mates thrive.

When coach Wayne Barnett had a problem naming a combination in the halves it was Guy Williams name that went forward to fill the void.

This week, against the Mackay Cutters, Williams will plug another vital hole in the Comets line-up as he replaces an injured Jade Williams in the fullback position.

As always Williams has no problem as that is where he is needed.

“I have played there,” he said.

“But not (in the Intrust Super Queensland Cup) for years.”

While recognised as one of the best second-rowers in the competition, Williams would not be too upset if asked to play regularly in the halves.

“That was somewhere I hadn’t played for a while, but I’d have to build a combination with Matt (Minto) or Ben (Hunt),” he said.

When given a run there, Williams was impressive in the way he supported the ball carrier, usually turning up on his shoulder to receive an off-load.

“I’ve always been pretty big on support, I know if I’ve got someone pushing up on me (to support) it makes my job easier,” he said.

Last year Williams’s consistent good form earned him a run with the Broncos and this year he again featured with the NRL team in pre-season matches, even captaining the side on one occasion.

Although not named in the squad for the Broncos season-opener with the Cowboys, Williams has not given up hope for a recall.

“They (Broncos) have told me I’m not out of the picture, but to go back to my club and play some good football,” he said.

Williams is not put off by the fact he is in his mid-20s and the majority of the squad is under 24 years of age.

“Something I noticed last year was how the squad is very young,” he said.

“It’s a tough situation as they have to look after their future.”

Williams admits playing in the NRL is totally different from Queensland Cup.

“The speed of the game, it’s a different class,” he said.

“They know what to do and then do it at the right time.

“They are well organised and very composed.”

Not that Williams is knocking the guys in the Comets squad – far from it –as he sees the Comets as a better outfit than last year.

“We’ve got most of last year’s squad,” he observed.

“The guys who have been added will add something to the squad.”

Williams said both Darren Mapp with his first grade experience and Josh Bishop, with his potential, fitted that category.

The experienced Comet also dismissed claims from “experts” that the Mackay Cutters would be the wooden-spooners once more saying the players they gained from the Cowboys and a coach, Paul Bramley, who had winning credentials, made the Cutters a tough opponent.
