Speedsters to hit top gear

FENDER Benders may have centre stage at the Rockhampton Showgrounds tonight but there is also plenty of other good racing on offer.

Chris Pendry was a winner when the Super Streets were in Rockhampton last time.

FENDER Benders may have centre stage at the Rockhampton Showgrounds tonight but there is also plenty of other good racing on offer.

Super Stockers never let their supporters down and that will be the case again as all the usual suspects will be on the track - the main hope is that they manage to stay on the track.

In recent meetings there has been a procession of top competitors limping to the sanctuary of the in-field with some sort of major mechanical breakdown.

Danny Lennon has spent more time there than most, even though he proved at the last meeting that once he has his motor functioning correctly, he is faster than ever.

At that meeting Lennon failed to finish in the heats and was therefore left to start the feature from the rear.

However, Lennon loves to face a challenge and dismantled the field to win the feature event.

Jeff Ohl was also a visitor to the in-field and it’s hard to accept Lennon would have got away with his rear to front race had his car been functioning efficiently.

Still, that is what the Super Stockers are all about, with all the drivers capable of taking the chequered flag.

Another to look good only to falter was Mark Hogan, who has also had his share of mechanical failures in recent months.

It is always good to see drivers return after an enforced break and do well.

Craig Weiden may have been out of action for a while but it would have been hard to recognise that as he was just as quick as ever.

Hogan agrees the division will be wide open but picks racers like Lee Briskey in his V8 Commodore as one of the quicker drivers.

He also likes the look of the inexperienced drivers like Brenton Scott, who is getting tougher with each meeting he attends.

Also supporting the Fender Benders tonight is the Super Street division.

Warren Johnson must love his racing as not only is he going to defend his CQ number one plate in the Fender Benders but he also has a car racing in the Super Street section.

Last time these guys were at the showgrounds, it was Chris Pendry who took the glory. And Pendry will be back racing tonight.

The V8 AMCA Nationals pick up extra support each time they race in Rocky. Big fields and little between the leading racers makes this a very competitive form of racing and one the crowd enjoys.

Action at Rockhampton Showgrounds begins at 5pm tonight.
