CAPRICORN Coast has taken top spot in the Capricornia League after a 5-0 victory against Southside United on Saturday.

The match started out tight before Ben Parker opened the scoring to take the match to 1-0 at half-time.

Cameron Mackay grabbed a brace and Johnathan Sauer and Dylan Kussrow added penalties in the second half.

Cap Coast coach Shaun Janes was pleased with the win, but said the Cap Coast side could still do more.

“I’m pretty happy with the way we played but I think we can still improve our passing game. But we’ve still got a long season ahead,” Janes said.

Southside United coach Trevor Woods said the coast side was “too good in the end.”

He felt the side was still in the game at 1-0, despite being under pressure, but were caught out in the second half when they pushed forward to create chances.

At Nerimbera yesterday, the Magpies picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory against the Central Queensland U19 team.

John Sunderland said he was “very happy” with the young Cougars side, who took to lead early on through a Josh McEachran goal.

Starting with 11 players, including state league players Michael Cay and Bryce Ruthven, the U19 side played went down to 10 players after Brad Smith went of injured.

Sunderland said was pleased with the partnership of forwards Dimitri Kondilis and Josh McEachran but was hoping for more from his midfielders.

“We probably didn’t condense in the middle of the park, we stayed a bit wide,” he said.

“We needed more work rate in the middle of the park.”

Nerimbera coach Adam Wratten was looking for an improved performance from his side, and considered yesterday’s result a positive step.

“We’ve got a long way to go, but it’s a step in the right direction. We’ll take it in small steps,” he said.

Gerrod Thomson, Nathan Mutch and Danny Cox scored the three Nerimbera goals.

Berserker consolidated second spot with a 3-2 victory against Bluebirds at Elizabeth Park.

Bluebirds took the lead early but Berserker pegged two goals back. Berserker then scored the winner from a free kick.

Bluebirds coach Gary Skinner said his side lacked discipline.

“We didn’t execute our plan. We gave them a little too much time and space,” Skinner said.

Frenchville opened their 2010 account with a 3-1 victory over Parkarna.
