Mackay now in cyclone's path

UPDATE: Cyclone Ului to hit Qld on weekend

TROPICAL Cyclone Ului is now predicted to cross the Queensland coast this weekend north of Mackay.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s latest information bulletin, issued at 11am, says the Category Three cyclone is expected to move southwest tonight and impact the coast between Cardwell and Mackay on Sunday morning.

The Bureau has declared a cyclone watch for coastal areas between Cardwell and Yeppoon and says damaging winds should develop in that zone during Saturday as the cyclone gets closer.

Wind gusts near the centre of Ului are in excess of 200kmh, while at the fringes they will be at gale force.

At 10am today the eye of the storm was 1310 kilometres east of Cairns, moving south-southwest at 6km an hour.

Forecasters say it is important to understand that predicting the precise track of a cyclone is impossible and advice may change. Earlier predictions were that the system would cross the coast further south, placing the Capricorn Coast in greater peril.

Extremely gusty conditions over much of the Queensland east coastal waters will continue as a result of a high pressure system in the Tasman Sea and the impact of the cyclone.

Seas and swell are expected to increase and produce dangerous surf conditions on exposed coasts.
