Liberal MP Peter Slipper closes his eyes during the historic speech in Parliament.
A FEDERAL Liberal MP caught on camera taking what appeared to be a nap while the Indonesian president addressed parliament last week is demanding the photographic culprit be found.
Queensland MP Peter Slipper was snapped with his eyes shut during Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's speech on March 10.
An image of the apparent nap, taken from a mobile phone by someone sitting on the coalition side of the lower house, was sent anonymously to Mr Slipper's local newspaper - The Sunshine Coast Daily - which published the shot.
It also appeared in The Weekend Australian.
Mr Slipper says the photograph had "seriously interfered" with his work.
"I... seek a forensic examination of the photograph by a qualified person to ascertain formally from which seat the photograph was taken," he told parliament, requesting that the matter be sent to the privileges committee.
Mr Slipper says the photograph was taken by someone on his right.
While the identity of the photographer was not conclusive, the MP said that he was sitting adjacent to Liberal colleague Alex Somlyay whose electorate of Fairfax borders Mr Slipper's seat of Fisher.
"It is impossible for this particular picture to have been taken from the (press) gallery."
Mr Slipper said he has raised the matter on behalf of all parliamentarians.
"Any of us could be caught in an unflattering position or with an unflattering expression on our faces."
House of Representatives Speaker Harry Jenkins said it was a serious matter.
"The taking of such a photograph would indeed be outside the guidelines of photography in the chamber," he said, adding should the culprit be an MP, he or she had behaved in a "most disorderly manner".
Mr Jenkins will report to the house on the issue at a later stage.

Isn't the culprit the MP who was caught sleeping on the job? I'm not sure of the standards of conduct for MPs but most other jobs require you to be awake when you're at work. If I were Mr Slipper, I'd let this issue take a nap!

Yes, of course. How could we have missed it?
The naughty photographer (bless him) is the "culprit", not Sleeper snoring away on the job.
So typical though. Anything to be less accountable, less active, less under scrutiny, less AWAKE.

Eyes closed hey Pete ?
Looks more like Rip Van Winkle to the casual observer !
Voters can't help but wonder who's "outside the guidelines" here ?
Is there anything in the Parlimetary Code of Conduct regarding sleep aponea whilst sitting ?
If I'd been so brazenly embarrassed I'd be looking to go on a witch hunt as well ..........
on a bipartisan witchhunt,
on behalf of all parlimentarians of course .

How much of taxpayers money and Parliaments time will be wasted on this useless exercise?
Can’t anyone from the Liberal National Party offer this out of touch underperformer some simple advice that he should say sorry, accept that this is not good enough and that it is his responsibility to vastly improve his ways?
Disgusting behaviour like this by Mr Slipper should not be tolerated.

Instead of apologising to the Australian Public for embarrassing the Nation in our House of Democracy,
Instead of apologising to the Federal Parliament for acting (again) in such an undignified and unacceptable way,
Instead of apologising to the President of Indonesia for misbehaving in such a disrespectful manner,
Instead of apologising to us long suffering constituents who have had an absolute gutful of his unacceptable and humiliating antics,
Peter Slipper MP exacerbates this belittling episode by trying to blame allocate to the person who outed him as a lazy, sleeping non performer.
All Liberals should be accepting responsibility for your Federal candidate, and all Liberals should be deeply ashamed and embarrassed.

This dodo just keeps getting worse. Anyone with half a brain would realize that he's messed up, got caught out, apologize and try shut it all down - this clown now wants to make an even bigger issue of it. This is just confirmation he's completely lost touch with reality and it's time to move on. Maybe a retirement village is a good option for him as he can then sleep all he likes.

A simple series of questions to this long serving backbencher could include;
Mr Slipper had you previously attended the formal (or official) Lunch?
Mr Slipper had you consumed any wine at the same formal (or official) Lunch?
Mr Slipper is it simply that you were definitely Not drunk again?

This is outrages an MP sleeping on the job and calling the photographer "The Culprit"
The exposed Culprit is in this published photo, exactly that one needs to be booted out..!!
We paying top wages to those rude, arrogant, egoistic sleeping non performers and wafflers in parliament.
In that would be in an Malaysian parliament, he would be drinking blood to keep him awake..!

wouldn't it have been nice if Sleeper had just admitted it, apologised, and moved on? Why can't people like him, especially politicians, ever admit they may have done something wrong?
People don't mind if you make a mistake and take responsibility for it, the problems come when the lying and blame shifting starts.

How funny, I wonder if we can catch him sleeping on the ABC broadcast of parliment.
Mr Slipper should be stood down, not for the fact that he was sleeping, but for the fact he cannont man up to the fact, and is tring to pass the buck

what a great LNP team we have here on the coast....
looks like the "knives" are being drawn amongst them already...
very tacky indeed... improve your position in the back room by publicly "assassinating" your team "mate"... on the floor of the house...
a bit like the "Bingle" phonecam shot... an illegal act?...
are members allowed to take cameras/photos on the floor of the house?....
is nodding off for a tick, the worse "crime" here?....
suspend the pair of them .. without pay ... and lock them in a small backroom together to sort it out in private....
disgraceful!...

So it's OK to sleep in the House, but photographing someone asleep is "disorderly".
Someone in the Coalition has it in for Slipper. Keep your eyes open Pete. It might help you see.

I have 3 words for you Slippery…
EYES. WIDE. SHUT.
Isn't there such a thing as conduct unbecoming?
If you had any mates in there, a good poke in the ribs was all that was required, but it is telling that no one sitting in cooee of you shook you awake, but they did have the nous to click their mobile phone in your direction to expose your total lack of duty of care for your position as a public servant & total contempt for representing this region.
Shouldn't the Leader of the Liberal Party be giving you a good talking to & a 'pick up you socks' (or in your case, slippers) lecture yet again?
Do the right thing & apologise to the Australian public & your local constituents for your disgraceful, disrespectful & embarrassing behaviour. Or better still just resign.

Mr Slipper says the photo was taken by someone on his right? Clever man, this bloke.
I would like to know what sort of qualification one needs to be able to conduct a forensic examination of a photograph to determine from where it was taken. Give me a seating plan of parliament and I'll tell you in two seconds...
In fact, Pete, when you wake up and read this, I'm happy to come on board as a photographic directional deployment consultant. For a fee, of course.

If slipperless Slipper sleeps on the job that is only because the people of Fisher wanted it so.
After all he had form and that form was public and they voted him in time and time again.
But then again who am I to moralize I punted on the great clueless and rudderless Rudd.

Well fayrose, it's easy to be "cleaver"; Mr Slipper is slumped back in his seat, has his eyes closed and looks in no way alert or actively involved in the proceedings - all reliable indicators that he was asleep. Also the very fact that he was snapped in this pose adds credence to him being unconscious throughout proceedings as does his angry outburst following the leaking of this photo. Would someone really have any reason to take a covert photo of mr Slipper if he was wide awake and taking part in the democratic process?

Give him a break....he may have just been contemplating! [With his eyes closed]
After all, the Indonesian Prime Minister is very boring. He just likes to talk about himself, I would close my eyes and contemplate too. I would only open them if he started playing the guitar Rudd gave him.
But I guess only Clapton is God.

From the above photograph, it would appear that the woman (MP?) four places to Mr Slipper's left was looking at the photographer as the shot was taken.
Maybe you should just ask her who it was?
Forensic examination? Please explain.

Hmmm...I would have thought that Mr Slipper better be careful of reprisal under the 'Whistleblowers Protection Act 1994' under:
17 Public officer may disclose negligent or improper
management affecting public funds
(1) A public officer may make a public interest disclosure about the conduct of another public officer, a public sector entity or a public sector contractor if—
(a) the officer has information about the conduct; and
(b) the conduct is negligent or improper management
directly or indirectly resulting, or likely to result, in a
substantial waste of public funds.
Isn't Mr Slipper being paid by public funds? Isn't his nodding off a negligent or improper use of those funds? And, most importantly and somewhat redundently, is his action resulting in a substantial waste of public funds???
On the face of it, it would seems so. Better watch out Mr Slipper...demanding a whistleblowers identity can get you in hot hot water and may be an offence.
You better sleep on your demands.

He has had a long time to tolerate Slippery.
If a Judge can fall asleep & NOT unduly affect the outcome of the case that he is judging (True!) then a towering intelect like Pete's can obviously handle a bit of a snooze whilst still adequately representing his constituents.

Compare the photo in the Daily with the one in the Weekend Australian. Same sleeping Slipper, but the one in the Australian is from the opposite side, and shows Mr Somlyay sitting in the seat from where the Daily's photo was taken.
This would be the same Mr Somlyay, who in Mr Slipper's own words in the Daily last year claimed "has been trying to gut me for years."
Public shaming has failed, and it now the battle is stepping up.
What a jolly bunch of pollies we have. Too busy scheming against each other to work together to get better facilities for the Coast!

I don't understand what all the fuss is about.
I've always seen Mr. Slipper as a very laid back member for Fisher, as this pic shows he's so laid back to the point of being comatose. Unfortunately for him another Coast fisher has caught him hook, line and sinker and he's taken the bait...forensic ??? What the heck !
Thank God there's no more important issue in our country at the moment.
He doesn't really fill the Mr. Bean look alike description, more fittingly a 'Has Bean' hopefully after the next Fed election.
Given his interest in new dive sites off the coast, I feel it would be very very appropriate to ' Sink the Slipper' at the next election.
Be fair, he's got a lot of beauty sleep to catch up on.

Simple fact is here, that it's bloody obvious that he's asleep yet like others have said he didn't apologise.
But the real issue is that he has blatanly LIED and is now trying to start a witch hunt to divert attention from his own failure.
Lucky he wasn't on any 'medication' like he was on that flight awhile back. He may have harrased a foreign head of state instead of dozing off.

I find his behaviour unacceptable and inexcusable.
Firstly as a person who has responsibilities to his electorate, his constituents, to his Party and to the Nation as a whole; He shows disinterest on what goes, and I thought he would be interested to hear what the Indonesian President had to say as His Country is our closest Northern Neighbour who is instrumental to our "Boat People" problem.
Secondly if he were caught sleeping at work in the Private Sector (like anyone of his constituents) his employer would have grounds to sack him.
Finally if you saw the conduct of our Parliamentary Members in Question time as a whole you would be disgusted, if they were children you would discipline them. Let’s hope Mr Peter Slipper will wake up for His Job and Responsibilities, and this may be a lesson for others in Parliament let’s hope anyway.
