ON Sunday at the Six Mile Raceway, motocross went one step closer to being the ultimate family sport when a serious challenge was thrown down by some of the senior members.
As a novelty event, a serious one of course, a dads’ race was held and the entries came flooding in.
No wonder, as the club had made the decision of offering a prize to the winner to suit the occasion, a pair of thongs.
Appropriately, the win went to Tony Noy, but Rockhampton Motocross Club publicity officer Brett Samuelson said the competitors in this race all went by their nickname and therefore the winner was “Noy Boy”.
Second place, in this fiercely fought contest where jumps were outlawed, was John “Joan” Swaffield, while Darryl “Big D” Newsome was third.
Not all racing was carried out in a similar manner with the club experiencing a healthy turnout of 156 riders.
Samuelson said it was a busy time for riders, and their families, with racing in the coming weeks at Hervey Bay, Dysart and then Mareeba.
One of the riders at the meeting was from Hervey Bay and Seth Muller showed the local riders he will be hard to beat on his home track as he cleaned up at Rockhampton, winning the Senior 65cc and Junior 85cc events.
Another visitor to give the local riders a lesson was Bundaberg’s Shannon King who was too hot to handle in the Senior Lites, beating home some handy riders in Justin Stapleton and Aaron Hutton.
Speed must be in the family’s blood as second place in the Ladies race, behind Prue Maejke, went to his sister Kiana.
There were also victories for a number of the regular competitors.
Liam Kenny rode well during the 2009 season and he has started where he left off with a victory in the Novice division, beating both Don Crane and Ryan Williams to the line.
The Pearce boys are also back in the winning routine.
Ty Pearce raced to victory in the Senior 85cc category, while his brother Blair was equally successful when competing in the Junior Lites division.
Samuelson’s own boy continued his fine early season form by recording a win in the junior 65cc division where he was a little too quick for Forde King and Locklan Croch who finished second and third respectively.
Not all the top riders could say they had a good day at the track.
Samuelson said Zak Newsome had “a big buster”, but fortunately the star Rockhampton rider was able to walk away from the incident virtually unscathed.
Many of the club members will be travelling to events around Queensland with CQ series meetings to be held at Dysart (March 27-28), Mackay (April 17-18), Emerald (May 8-9), Gladstone (May 29-30) and Longreach (June 12-13) before the next club meeting is held at Six Mile Raceway on June 20.
