Cap Coast could feel Ului tomorrow

CAPRICORN Coast beaches could be lashed with high winds and dangerous surf later tomorrow as Severe Tropical Cyclone Ului edges ever closer.

Ului has weakened to category two intensity and is now moving to the south-west towards the Queensland coast.

The Bureau of Meteorology says it now appears unlikely that the cyclone will reintensify.

It says the most likely scenario is for the cyclone to cross the coast Sunday morning between Cardwell and Mackay.

It may remain at category 2 intensity by landfall.

Damaging winds should develop between Cardwell and Yeppoon later tomorrow, then increase further Sunday morning as the cyclone nears the coast then extend to the adjacent inland parts.

People on the coast between Cardwell and Yeppoon are being asked to consider what action they will take if the cyclone threat increases and owners of homes built before 1982 are warned they could be at threat unless they are in good repair.

Wind speeds near the centre of the storm are at least 165kmh and cyclone experts are predicting 100kmh winds throughout the Rockhampton region during the weekend when heavy rains are also expected.

The SES is warning people to stay well away from the ocean’s edge and contact the service of 132 500 for emergency service if required.

About 150 SES volunteers are on standby in the Rockhampton Regional Council area where stocks of sandbags, generators and emergency equipment have been gathered to respond to those in difficulty.
