Caribeae swimmers lead Rocky blitz

ROCKHAMPTON swimmers cleaned up at last weekend’s Central Queensland Championships in Gladstone.

Caribeae Swimming Academy won champion club of Central Queensland, beating Rocky City Swim Club and Gladstone

Gladiators swim clubs in second and third.

The Rockhampton club won the trophy for the highest points achieved in finals.

Rocky City Swim Club won the high point trophy for a team with more than 21 swimmers.

Individually Rockhampton swimmers broke Central

Queensland allcomers records and represented many of the age champions.

Twelve-year-olds Karleigh Banks and Alanna Bowles broke CQ Allcomers records on the first evening of competition in the 800m freestyle.

Just 0.25 seconds separated the girls in the 16-lap race, with both setting national qualification times.

Caribeae coach David Milburn rated the girls’ swims as one of the highlights of meeting.

Also winning accolades for her swim in the 800m was Rocky City’s Miranda Bell, who won the Nev Hamilton award for the 800m swim.

Bowles was further rewarded with the “best performance” by a female swimmer.

Also setting records were Emu Park’s Arna Couper, Rocky City’s Jared O’Hanlon, Miranda Bell and Todd Russell and Gladstone’s Alex Williams and Bianca Turner.

Rocky City’s Maddison Bygrave and Gladstone’s Alex Williams won awards for the highest aggregate points by an open swimmer.

14 years: Alex Williams (Gladstone) and Maddison Bygrave (Rocky City); R/ Up: Chris Hansen (Gladstone) and Elspeth Thorpe (Boyne Tannum)

15 years: Sam Bell (Rocky City) and Hayley Quartermaine (Gladstone); R/ Up: Frazer Kirk (Caribeae) and Jodie Mulvihill (Rocky City)
