AS a council worker dumped a load of rubbish at Rockhampton’s Landfill yesterday he heard tiny squeals.

To his horror seven baby kittens came rolling out of a cardboard box from the back of his truck.

They were extremely sick.

The kittens, which were one week old, were rushed to the vet but it was unknown if they would survive last night.

RSPCA Senior Inspector Shayne Towers-Hammond yesterday said it was so disheartening to see this level of animal cruelty especially after the many convictions through Rockhampton Magistrates Court last week.

Inspector Towers-Hammond said he wanted the perpetrator to know they would be caught.

He is following up on locations the truck collected from across the city but is yet to determine if the kittens came from a private or industrial bin.

“I can’t believe someone would consciously dump kittens – I’m just really disappointed,” he said.

“It feels like we’re taking two steps forward and one step back.”

It’s believed the kittens have cat flu and may have to be euthanised.

“There must be a very distressed mother out there too,” Inspector Towers-Hammond said.

“If people just desex their animals it would save a lot of problems. People just expect us to clean up their mess. The council workers were quite devastated to find them too.

“We’re not going to stop until we find who was responsible.”

When will the message get through? The Central Queensland region, has one of the highest instances of animal cruelty. Nothing to be proud of, am sure! These creatures have a nervous system, the same as we do.

Good to see the courts starting to hand out some stiff fines, Shayne . As you know from the military, the best way to punish someone, is to hit them in the hip pocket.

Keep up the good work Digger.
