AS the “luck of the Irish” would have it, Springsure races are all go today for the annual St Patrick’s Day bash.
A four-race card is on the agenda plus a swag of other activities ranging from fashions on the field to children’s entertainment plus a band for those who wish to party on after the races.
And they know how to party out at Springsure.
Horses are coming from Blackall, Barcaldine, Mackay, Rockhampton, Thangool and places in between.
Grand campaigner Jyi’s Prospect has a second-to-none chance of winning the main race, the $6000 Bracelet Handicap (1300m) which also carries a $500 trophy.
Queensland Racing Limited’s (QRL) decision to add a QTIS 600 bonus race to the program in Rockhampton next Thursday has brought about an embarrassment of riches.
The race over the distance of 1050 metres will only start 11 horses yet 32 have been nominated.
QRL is now between a rock and a hard place as there is every chance there will be sufficient acceptors to warrant a division which would lead to a 10-race card.
If QRL did not divide under such circumstances, it would leave itself open for widespread criticism from provincial owners who have provided outstanding support to the QTIS 600 bonus scheme by purchasing eligible yearlings.
A dozen juveniles have entered for Thursday’s $25,000 Capricornia Training Company 2YO Classic (1200m).
It promises to be a busy week for Rockhampton racing as next Saturday the Rockhampton Jockey Club (RJC) hosts the Capricornia Training Company Race Day, which will feature fashions on the field.
“Sponsored by CQ Evolution, there will be great prizes up for grabs for both ladies and gentlemen,” the RJC’s Denis Cox said.
Cox also reminded club members of the crucial special meeting on Monday, March 29 at 6.30pm at Callaghan Park to vote on the proposed joint ownership with QRL.
