One Stone rockets home

THE Callaghan Park track copes well with water and Jason Feeney's One Stone took a liking to conditions, scorching to victory in the 1st grade sprint.

The Dallas Beckett-trained Tardis looks good in winning the Mixed Final Sprint at Callaghan Park on Saturday.

THE Callaghan Park track doesn’t mind a sprinkling of water and the Jason Feeney flyer One Stone certainly took a liking to conditions, scorching to victory in the 1st grade sprint.

One Stone has been slightly off the pace in recent weeks but on Saturday was right back to form, winning by three-and-a-half lengths and getting home in a time of 23.38 seconds.

All that and the Feeney dog was paying out $3.20 for his legion of followers.

Closest to One Stone was the Walter Bennetts dog Big is Beautiful with the expected winner Spring Malawi, trained by Dallas Beckett, in third place.

He may have lost that one but Beckett had a reasonable afternoon, collecting a double in the 4th grade sprint with Palomino, a two-length winner from Michelle Brider’s Loose Money, and then winning the Mixed Final sprint with Tardis.

Beckett had three inexperienced dogs in this final, and will be delighted that Tardis took the win, while kennel-mate It All Counts was third, four lengths behind the winner.

Beckett and Ray Pike had five of the eight dogs in the field and so not surprisingly it was the Pike dog, Cullingtree, that prevented Beckett gaining total dominance.

It was a tight finish for the Mixed Final over the 510 metre course.

Mark Bube was expected to have the winning dog as he went into the race with heat winners She’s so Rad and Elusive’s Shadow.

However, it was the Neville Jackson dog Bronze Babe that stole the glory, beating Elusive’s Shadow by half-a-length.

Bill Boon’s Surf Shell was almost four lengths further adrift.

There were a number of dogs better fancied than Mark Lutter’s Louch in Roull, but that did not stop the Lutter dog bounding home in first place in the 2nd/3rd grade sprint.

Louch in Roull was not even given the best of the draw but was still two lengths too quick for Boon’s Ben Morvan, coming out of the one box, and Jeff Kuhl’s Cocoriffic racing from the next best box.

Lutter was another trainer who enjoyed a double for the meeting.

His other win came in the 4th/5th grade race over the 510m.

Although the winning time was nothing special, Baden Dash was two lengths too good for the red-hot favourite Fuelled Speed, with Ray Young’s Miss Cover Story in third place.

There were also three 5th grade sprints on the card with Kuhl’s Boyzo an impressive winner.

However, it was Neville Cumner who had the glory with long shots Frederico winning with a $12 payout and Eddie Buoy, also at long odds, winning the final race on the card with the best 5th grade time over the sprint distance.
