Peter Murphy wants more young drivers like Matt Siegmeier to compete in the street sprint.
PETER Murphy has a message for Rockhampton hoons and lappers: Where the bloody hell are you?
Peter, one of the organisers for the Motormania CQ Street Sprint, yesterday challenged “lappers, drifters and dribblers” to nominate for this month’s big time trial around the Rockhampton Showground precinct.
He was disappointed that there had not been a single entry from these type of drivers for the Motormania Street Sprint on July 24-25.
He said there were dozens of people who liked hooning around town in flash, high-powered cars on Thursday nights, but none had taken up the opportunity to compete legally.
“Drifters are the ones who think they can drive, but actually can’t, and end up bouncing over the gutters and through people’s fences and give all the young drivers a bad name,” he said.
“And the dribblers are the ones who stand around in groups and prattle on about their car’s kilowatts, boost pressures and 13-second quarters, etc, and who have never even been to a drag strip.
“They’re a bunch of pussies. When they have the opportunity to race safely they don’t seem to have the enthusiasm.”
Peter said the opportunity to try out the cars on a bitumen-covered, 1km legal street course was available, with the police, council and safety organisers working together to ensure a safe event.
He said he was looking for 20 to 30 young locals to have a go at one of the cheaper forms of motor sport.
The street sprint course will start in the showgrounds, before exiting onto Lion Creek Road and a flying finish on Exhibition Road.
Peter said he wasn’t sure why Rockhampton car enthusiasts weren’t taking up the chance to test their cars and their driving skills.
“I don’t know, maybe because it’s the first time and no one has seen it before, so they’re a bit tentative.
“The whole idea is to have a go. A lot of them have far better cars than we did when we started.
“Maybe they’re scared to put their reputations on the line,” he said.
To enter, competitors must pay the $180 entry fee, apply for a single-event licence for $55 and must also pay the $30 fee to join the CQ Motor Sporting Car Club.
For their vehicles, drivers need a helmet, a fitted fire extinguisher and a battery location marker.
To enter the event, visit http://www.motormaniacq.com.au/ or for more information call clerk of the course Gordon Fisher on 4922 0111.
