Darcy Bolton, Rod Graff, and skip "AVOCADO" Col James were comfortable winners last weekend.
THE “pineapple” might not be a winning part of lawn bowls, but at North Rockhampton the “Avocado” certainly is.
Recently North Rockhampton held the club section of the District Triples with a star member of the winning trio being “Avocado Col” – alias Col James.
It would appear, according to sources close to the club, that James earned this dubious title after a slight slip while on safari for the famed wild avocado of Queensland.
Fortunately his expedition into the unknown has not affected his bowling talent.
Last weekend the cream rose to the top once more with the combination of Darcy Bolton, Rod Graff and Col James proving worthy champions with a comfortable 23-18 win over another talented team of Ken Ingram, Geoff Baldwin and Bill James.
With the match being brother versus brother there was always going to be niggle during the afternoon, but the affectionately known “Avocado Col” played excellent bowls, well supported by his team-mates.
Bolton and Col James will also represent North Rockhampton in the District Pairs play-off on September 4-5 for the third year in a row. The playoff for the pairs will be held at Diggers Club.
James and Bolton will then be joined by Rod Graff and Paul Schafferius in the District Fours playoff at Yeppoon Club on September 11-12.
The final of the NRBC District Singles is yet to be completed
The play-off for the District Triples is scheduled for September 25-26 at Emu Park Bowls Club.
Denis Bartlem said unfortunately the district controlling body had seen fit to hold the play-off on that weekend even though Diggers Club has The Hook Anderson Memorial Fours on at the same time. He said the Hook Anderson event had been held on the last weekend in September for many years.
