Kirsten Livermore rapt with PM

THE relieved Member for Capricornia Kirsten Livermore yesterday expressed delight that Labor would stay in government.

The ALP’s lone ranger in regional Queensland, Ms Livermore (pictured) said she couldn’t be happier the process was now over and her good friend Julia Gillard would remain Prime Minister.

Ms Livermore, who won her fifth term at the August 21 election by securing nearly 55 per cent of the vote on a two-party preferred basis against the LNP’s Michelle Landry, said she looked forward to going to Canberra and getting on with the job as part of the Gillard Government.

During the election campaign Labor committed $40 million to the Yeppen junction and $116 million for the Peak Downs Highway.

“I am delighted this part of the process is now over and Julia Gillard will remain Prime Minister, I now have to await the declaration of the poll for Capricornia,” she said.

“I believe this will happen on Thursday and I will then be officially re-elected.

“I will then be off to Canberra to ensure our policies and commitments are fulfilled.”

The newly-elected Member for Flynn, the LNP’s Ken O’Dowd, said he was shocked at the outcome and concerned because the result has been a three-party coalition of the Greens, Labor and Independents.

“It will test my negotiating skills out with the new three-party government,” he said.

Former Member for Flynn, Labor’s Chris Trevor yesterday conceded the seat to Mr O’Dowd but said the electorate would still benefit from the Labor Party’s narrow win.

“It will make sure we see delivery of the Calliope crossroads overpass, the port access road extension and the Gary Larson Oval upgrade,” he said.
