Riverbank plans unveiled in Rocky

PREMIER Anna Bligh will today unveil concept plans for the next stage of the Riverbank Redevelopment when she arrives to govern Queensland from Rockhampton for the next three days.

The Premier said governing from Rockhampton was an opportunity to focus on the big issues facing the region.

“Central Queensland is doing well with renowned beef country, a large and diversified job market with manufacturing, transport and construction industries,” Ms Bligh said. “There is also significant jobs growth predicted in servicing mining and resource industries including LNG and I want to make sure Rockhampton and the region is well placed to make the most of all its opportunities.

“A balanced city also needs improved recreation facilities and that’s why we are investing nearly $30 million to help Rockhampton make the most of the Fitzroy River.”

The Bulletin has been provided a sneak peak at the concept plans for the next stage of the Riverbank Redevelopment.

The Premier said the redevelopment would include a memorial to Victoria Cross recipient Private John Leak who enlisted in Rockhampton in 1915.

“Stage three of the redevelopment will feature a mosaic on Private John Leak, whose heroism on the Western Front in World War I is known to many locals,” Ms Bligh said.

She said the State Government was working with Rockhampton Regional Council to finalise the Stage Three plans. She said the State Government’s total contribution to the redevelopment was $29.1 million.

“Stage Three concept plans include the possibility of a fitness trail, additional shade structures, improved accessibility and public viewing opportunities on the Fitzroy River,” the Premier said.

“There’s also potential to create a new riverside precinct from Cambridge St to Fitzroy Bridge, and a Queen’s Park link to Moores Creek.”

Member for Rockhampton Robert Schwarten said Stage Three included an extra $2 million for further improvement to the Southside Memorial Swimming Pool.

“This will fund a shade structure to the pool, which is currently under construction, as well as an adjacent grandstand,” Mr Schwarten said.

Member for Keppel Paul Hoolihan said the facility would incorporate a 50-metre, 10-lane, Olympic competition-standard heated pool – and the only FINA compliant swimming pool in Queensland outside Brisbane.

Stage One of the Riverbank Redevelopment included a new playground, two fishing platforms, pathways to the Fitzroy Bridge and car parking for the bowls club.

Stage Two included a boat ramp and floating walkway, a third fishing platform, a new amenities block, upgraded car parking, basketball court upgrade and shade structures to the play area.
