WEIR TRAGEDY: Nelani Koefer was swept away in a surge of water when a section of the Bedford Weir’s inflatable storage barrier burst on a Sunday in November 2008.
THE family of a four-year-old girl who drowned when a weir collapsed is taking legal action against the Queensland government and the weir's manufacturer and operator.
The Koefer family was enjoying a picnic beside the Mackenzie River in central Queensland in November 2008 when Nelani was swept away.
An inflatable section of Bedford Weir near Blackwater, about 200km west of Rockhampton, burst, releasing thousands of megalitres of water into the river where Nelani was swimming.
Nelani's mother Amy Koefer, and her grandparents Deborah and Michael, have lodged an originating application with the Supreme Court in Rockhampton.
The matter is listed for mention on Monday.
