10 schoolies arrested on first night of celebrations

END of school celebrations officially kicked off last night with 10 male schoolies arrested on 15 offences. 

The majority of the arrests were for being drunk and a public nuisance. 

Only two schoolies were issued with liquor infringement notices for drinking in a public place.

Police arrested 16 non-schoolies on 18 charges, mainly for public nuisance and other good order offences. There was also 15 non-schoolies issued with liquor infringement notices.

So far, police say they are pleased with the schoolies' behaviour, with only a small number of the large crowd coming to the attention of police.

Extra police resources have been allocated to the Gold Coast for week, which is expected to see Surfers Paradise and surrounds swell with up to 35,000 arrivals.
