$1.2m in grants for innovative road safety ideas

REGIONAL Queenslanders came up with some doozies to promote road safety last year and they have another opportunity to do the same again from today.

Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson is calling on locals to put forward their innovative road safety ideas for a share of the $1.2 million in funding in the next round of community road safety grants.

The government received 76 applications last year and 41 were successful in sharing $815,000.

The Southern Downs Council planned to install 24 road trivia game signs on the New England and Cunningham highways to keep drivers' minds alert and ward off fatigue.

The Toowoomba Liquor Industry Action Group will trial a Maxi-taxi hire program while the Mackay council will partner with a neighbourhood centre to assist 25 migrants in obtaining a C Class Australian driver's licence.

The Sunshine Coast planned to offer free BAC tests outside popular venues and offer vouchers if people completed a survey designed to identify the factors that influence a drivers' propensity to drink and drive.

Mr Emerson said each group - from non-profit organisations to schools to councils - could apply for up to $25,000 in funding in the next five weeks for local safety initiatives.

"We promised to revitalise frontline services, but making our roads safer is a whole-of-community effort and it's great that local Queensland groups have the chance to come forward with ideas to reduce the road toll," he said.

"Local ideas, adapted to local conditions, are critical to improving road safety and these grants let government, business and the community work together to target local road safety.

"While we have seen a decrease in the road toll, there are still too many lives lost on our roads each year.

"All projects must be clearly focused on road safety initiatives, particularly focussing on driver distractions and road crash injury rehabilitation programs."

Applications for funding close on March 10. For more information visit www.tmr.qld.gov.au/roadsafetygrants
