17-year-old killed in collision

TE KOWAI: A teenager was killed and four men were taken to hospital after a high-impact collision at an intersection on the Peak Downs Hwy at Te Kowai yesterday.   Adrian Smith, a 17-year-old who lived with his parents at Greenmount, near Walkerston, died when the green hatchback he was driving and a QR National truck collided about 8.50am.   The four men travelling in the small truck, aged in their 20s and 30s, complained of back pain and were taken to Mackay Base Hospital for treatment but were not admitted.   Mr Smith was the sole occupant of the hatchback.   Firefighters and police were at another crash only a few hundred metres down the highway when the fatality occurred. The occupants of the two vehicles, which collided shortly after 8am, were treated at the scene.   Emergency services crews were called to a third crash, on Peel St, Mackay, at 12.10pm where firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to free a woman from a vehicle.   QR National declined to comment yesterday.
