$1m per cell expansion of Capricornia jail is 'job creating'

QUEENSLAND Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has defended the more than $1 million per cell cost to expand the Capricornia jail as "creating regional Queensland jobs”.

During Question Time in Parliament on Wednesday, LNP shadow treasurer Scott Emerson asked Ms Palaszczuk why building 164 new cells at the Capricornia Correctional Centre would cost $200 million.

Mr Emerson described the cells as "a prisoner's penthouse and Jacuzzi” because of the cost of more than $1 million for each cell. He said the government had scrapped an LNP plan to build about 650 cells for a cost of $61 million.

But Ms Palaszczuk said the project was creating jobs in the Rockhampton region.

"Mr Speaker $200 million being spent in the Rockhampton regional area, Mr Speaker, creating jobs,” she said.

"They (the LNP) are against jobs, they're against prisons, I don't know what else they're against.”

She said the former LNP government's prison plan would have expanded jails in Brisbane at the expense of the central Queensland jail.

"The option presented today is that we should have done the expansion in Brisbane, Mr Speaker. This is about creating jobs in regional Queensland,” she said.

"These correction facilities are being built to the proper standards that are expected to house prisoners in this state.”

In a raucous question time session, Speaker Peter Wellington was repeatedly forced to pause the Premier's response to warn LNP members for interrupting and yelling out.
