How Socceroos are tops when put on the spot

AUSTRALIA'S best chance at the World Cup could be penalties, research suggests.

Data shows Socceroos captain Mile Jedinak is the best penalty-taker at the World Cup and Australia's goalkeeper Mat Ryan is the best penalty-stopper.

JD Sports Football examined past penalties, saying Jedinak has never missed from 14 career penalties.

Teammate Aaron Mooy has scored nine out of 10, his 90 per cent strike rate better than Cristiano Ronaldo (84 per cent) and Lionel Messi (77 per cent), who have both taken more career penalties.

Among goalkeepers, Ryan has saved 11 and not saved 19 penalties - a 37 per cent rate.

Ryan's rating betters Spain's David de Gea (27 per cent) and German Manuel Neuer (35 per cent), though the latter duo had faced more penalties in their careers.
