$20k damage: Drunk man's rampage at car dealership

IT TOOK a Gold Coast man just minutes to cause almost $20,000 worth of damage at Bill Robertson Toyota in an incident he says he doesn't remember.

Tyrell John Born, 34, was back in Gladstone, his hometown, and drinking at a number of local hotels on June 18 last year.

He ended up at the car dealership in the early hours of the following morning, where he kicked and hit two glass doors and eight cars, leaving a damage bill of about $19,500.

As he pleaded guilty to three counts of wilful damage in Gladstone Magistrates Court today, Born's lawyer said he still did not remember the incident.

Cassandra Ditchfield said her client was "grossly intoxicated" on the night, and only became aware of the damage when police showed him CCTV footage from the dealership.

Ms Ditchfield said Born was "self medicating with alcohol" after the breakdown of his relationship and couldn't remember how he got home that night.

She said Born was remorseful for his actions and willing to sell his own car to pay the damage bill.

"It's a real offer to make amends," Ms Ditchfield said.

Ms Ditchfield said Born had been receiving alcohol counselling since the incident and planned to continue doing so.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Barry Stevens said Born's actions had been a significant burden on a local business, in what were not the easiest of economic times.

Sgt Stevens said Born's behaviour was no less serious because the dealership was covered by insurance.

Magistrate Melanie Ho sentenced Born to 12 months probation with alcohol counselling for the two broken doors, and a nine month jail sentence, suspended for two years, for the damaged cars.

Because he was given a suspended sentence, Born was not ordered to repay the $19,500.
