40 Gladstone property owners face sell-off over rates

THE council has given 40 property owners three months to stump up the cash on overdue rates or risk having their homes sold.

Gladstone Regional Council is in to the property owners for almost half a million dollars, with one person needing to pay back $52,308 in overdue rates to avoid having four units in Butler St at New Auckland put on the market.

Although the council's threat to sell these properties may seem harsh, in a notice submitted to the Queensland Government Gazette it said the rates or charges were either "at least three years overdue or (a) default judgment" had been made by the Magistrates Court.

"If the overdue rates or charges are not paid within three months of the notice, the council will issue a Notice of Sale to the property owner and commence proceedings to sell the property," the notice read.

"(However) the sale proceedings will be discontinued if the amount of all overdue rates or charges levied on the land, and all expenses incurred by the council ... are paid to it."Out of the 40 property owners, eight live outside of Queensland, while seven more live outside the Gladstone region.

There were 18 properties in Gladstone with overdue rates or charges and five more each in Calliope and Boyne/Tannum.

At a general meeting convened by the council in January, Mayor Matt Burnett sympathised with owners who may lose their proprieties but added you couldn't "walk into a supermarket, get some milk and walk out and tell them you'll pay next week".

He said that during the last three to four years, five properties had been auctioned off by the council.
