63 Rocky cops set for G20 assignment

ROCKHAMPTON police being deployed as part of security operations surrounding the G20 World Leaders Summit will take up their roles from this weekend.

Sixty-three officers from the Rockhampton division will be sent to Brisbane to help with a range of different duties associated with the international summit.

Those duties include specialist roles, motorcade and route security, venue security, crowd management and dignitary protection.

The officers will be away from the Rockhampton region for 10 days as part of the assignment.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said sending officers to Brisbane would not have an effect on Rockhampton policing levels.

He would not divulge the number of police based at stations across the region for operational reasons, but said a leave embargo ensured all stations would operate at full capacity.

The spokesman said any matters in the both the Rockhampton and Yeppoon magistrates courts involving police officers had been put on hold during the G20 period.

"These measures were put in place to ensure that the service had optimal staffing levels to police the G20 events in Queensland as well as our core business," he said.

The Rockhampton and Yeppoon magistrates courts will remain "operational" next week ahead of the G20, but will not hear any matters.

A spokesman from the Office of the Chief Magistrate denied it would be a case of the lights being on, but nobody at home during the G20 period.

He would not divulge what operational actually meant.

"All magistrates courts are operational however, no criminal matters requiring police prosecutions or police witnesses have been listed for next week.

"Both (Rockhampton and Yeppoon) magistrates courts have made arrangements to add additional sitting days after the G20 so that this rescheduling will lead to little if any delay to court proceedings."
