Is Lockyer the new king?

WALLY Lewis has always been the King of Origin football, but with Darren Lockyer hanging up his boots at the end of this series, has Lewis lost his crown?

The question is a tricky one that will have league fans arguing for years to come.

The King was immortalised in bronze outside Suncorp Stadium after leading Queensland out of the rugby league wilderness and now Lockyer will also be immortalised and stand beside Wally.

So who is the best?

The Gympie Times asked six local league identities who they thought was the King of Origin, Queensland's best player and the results came back evenly split.

Even though the result was split all respondents had to really think about their answers and it's no wonder when you look at the statistics.

Lewis played 30 Origin games, 29 as captain, scored seven tries and kicked two field goals.

Lockyer on the other hand has played 33 and is about to play his 34th; barring injury he will play 36.

He has captained the side 19 times scored nine tries, kicked 22 goals and two field goals.

By the statistics Lockyer pips Lewis at the post, but as former Queensland player Reg Cannon says “it is hard to judge players from different eras.”

Cannon played league for Queensland in 1969 and 1970 before the State of Origin era.

He said Lewis was the type of player who could put on a try at any stage in a game.

“It was like he could press a button and turn a game around whenever he wanted to,” Cannon said.

“Where Lockyer is a precision player.

“Everything he does is perfection.

“Lockyer is exciting but Wally is still the King.”
