Fresh evidence points to climate change killing Barrier Reef

APN NEWSDESK - not online until wed.WARMING ocean waters due to climate change is discouraging Great Barrier Reef corals from spreading out, potentially creating new risks for the reef, according to a James Cook University report out today.

As that connectivity between corals begins to wane in the warmer climes, JCU's Dr Joana Figueiredo from the Coral Centre of Excellence said it could make the iconic reef more vulnerable.

Dr Figueiredo said there was a positive - the shift may also mean reefs can better recover after storms or a spike in bleaching.
