New private practice opens at Capricorn Coast Hospital
From The Capricorn Coast Mirror
THE people of the Capricorn Coast now have an additional option for their health care with the opening this week of a new private medical practice within the Capricorn Coast Hospital at Yeppoon.
General practitioner Dr Peter Smith, who is the owner and manager of Cedar Park-based Total Health, will operate the new clinic in rooms leased from the hospital under a deal struck between his business and the Capricorn Coast Hospital and Health Service (Capricorn Coast HHS).
Although located at the hospital, the new Total Health practice will run in a similar way to any other general practice.
Total Health will operate completely independently from the hospital and will not provide medical services to the hospital.
For patients, it means that when they attend the hospital, they will be able to choose between public health care provided by hospital staff or opt instead for private health care provided by Dr Smith and Total Health staff.
The finishing touches were being applied late last week to the Total Health rooms at the hospital.
Dr Smith and Total Health were welcomed to the hospital on Friday by Member for Keppel Bruce Young, Capricorn Coast HHS director of nursing Rhylla Webb and Central Queensland HHS executive director of rural health services Rodney Hutcheon.
Mr Young said the departure of a previous doctor to local private practice had seen the rooms become available and enabled negotiations to take place over setting up the new private option at the Capricorn Coast Hospital.
The establishment of the new service represented a win for all parties involved, he said, including patients, who would now be able to select the form of health care that best suited their needs.
