Mama & Papa's Pizzaria brings out beer-flavoured gelato
BEER and gelato - together at last thanks to one Sunshine Coast pizzeria.
Mama & Papa's at Maroochydore has boldly introduced a beer-flavoured gelato to its menu for a limited time.
The concoction is the brainchild of owner Paul Bertino and he described it as the fruits of much trial and error.
"I'm always coming up with new flavours and making my own gelato, thinking of something different," he said.
"And I thought about beer gelato.
"We have gelato at our restaurant. Pizza and beer also go so well together. I often sit down with my mates after work and have a pizza and beer.
"So I thought why not beer and gelato?"
The gelato will be on the menu at Mama & Papa's Sixth Avenue store for about a week.
The beer gelato is made from Italian lager Peroni and Mr Bertino described it as a little bit sweet and "not like you would suspect".
"People taste it and straight away they recognise the flavour, but they can't put their finger on it," he said.
"They don't know what it is, but they know they've tasted it before. I think that's because when you think about gelato you don't think about beer, you think about fruit or something sweet."
