Marquez becomes youngest MotoGP champion

SPANISH rookie Marc Marquez has become the youngest MotoGP world champion after the 20-year-old Honda rider finished third in the final race of the season in Valencia.

Defending world champion, Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo, won the race but Marquez only had to finish fourth or better to beat Freddie Spencer's 30-year-old record, set when the American won his maiden crown at the age of 21, also on a Honda.

"This is a dream that comes true," Marquez said after the race. "I cannot explain what I feel."

Spencer, now 51, was one of the first to say well done to his young successor.

"Congratulations Marc to you and the team! I couldn't be happier for you! Enjoy this moment!" he said on Twitter. The result meant Marquez finished the season with 334 championship points, four ahead of Lorenzo - the smallest points-winning margin since 1992.

Marquez, who won six races this season, is also the first debut-season title-winner since American Kenny Roberts in 1978.

He also became only the fourth rider in the 65-year history of MotoGP racing to win world titles in three different categories - the others were Mike Hailwood, Phil Read and Valentino Rossi.
