Assange addresses Splendour

JULIAN Assange has addressed a crowd at Splendour in the Grass, commending a generation on striving for justice and peace.

Assange, who is currently under house arrest as he appeals an extradition order in the UK, recorded the message for the Splendour Forum.

The messaged followed a discussion panel which was to "lift the lid on the powers struggling for control of the internet”.

Reporters on the ground have also heard a rumour that Jay Z will perform with Kanye West tonight.

30,000 line up for Splendour

MUSIC festival Splendour in the Grass, which kicks off today, is tipped to draw more than 30,000 fans to rural Woodford.

And for the first time, the festival will have single day tickets on sale at the gate.

The Woodfordia site, south of Caloundra, can take 32,000 people a day.

About 30,000 tickets a day have been pre-sold.

The three-day festival features some of the best music acts in Australia and from around the world, including Kanye West, Coldplay, Gotye, Gomez, The Vines, Elbow, Jedediah and The Hives.

More than 90 acts will take to eight stages during the weekend.

Police have warned they will have a high-profile presence at the festival. They will target drink- and drug-affected drivers.

Festival set for splendid start

Sunshine, smooth-flowing traffic and the announcement of split day festival tickets – how splendid!

About 20,000 campers and 10,000 daytrippers are expected to descend on Woodford today for the official start of Splendour In the Grass.

The three-day festival will headline Kanye West tonight, Jane's Addiction tomorrow and Coldplay on Sunday.

In a hope to bring crowd numbers to capacity, organisers are offering about 2000 one-, two- and three-day passes at the gate.

Music lovers can pick up a full pass for $401.50, Saturday and Sunday for $269 and Sunday only for $136.80.

Early-bird revellers heading to campgrounds yesterday escaped last year's nightmare congestion.

Senior Sergeant Malcolm Lilley said a second gate to Woodfordia had helped reduce traffic delays.

“Parking permits in place also encourage car pooling,” he said.

Police will target drink- and drug-affected drivers.

Snr Sgt Lilley said the taskforce already had charged two drivers who returned positive readings.

A shuttle bus will run to and from Woodford showgrounds, every 30 minutes. Cost is $4 each way.
