Tragedy; eight dead during attempt on own life

THE man arrested for fatally shooting eight people including a sheriff's deputy in Mississippi confessed to the crime while still in handcuffs Sunday morning - saying he planned to die at the hands of police but he ran out of ammunition.

Godbolt, 35, allegedly killed the eight victims, including a sheriff's deputy and several relatives, at three separate homes in rural Lincoln County on Saturday night.

Sitting on the ground in cuffs after his arrest, Godbolt said the deputy wasn't a target - he was speaking with his wife and other relatives about custody of his kids, and neighbors called the police.

"My pain wasn't designed for him. He was just there," Godbolt said. "We was talking about me trying to take the children home, and somebody called the officer … that's what they do, they intervene. It cost him his life. I'm sorry."

Godbolt claimed he went on the shooting rampage because he loves his wife, kids and Bogue Chitto - an incorporated county around 70 miles from Jackson where they live, the Clarion-Ledger reports.

"I love my wife. I love my kids. They would not let me live and let live. I just wanted to live. I just wanted to love my family," Godbolt yelled as police pinned him down on the ground during the arrest.

Asked what comes next for him, Godbolt replied: "Death."

"I ain't fit to live. Not after what I done. Not in ya'll eyes, not in nobody else's eyes but God - he forgives you for everything," he added.

Three women were shot alongside Deputy William Durr, 36, at 11:30 p.m. in Bogue Chitto, in addition to two boys at another home, and a man and woman at a third residence, both in nearby Brookhaven cops said.

Authorities haven't yet identified any of the other victims, but Godbolt's step-father, who witnessed the shooting, told the Associated Press they included his wife, Barbara Mitchell, her daughter, Toccarra May, and sister, Brenda May.

Durr was a two-year veteran of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, and had worked as a cop for four years elsewhere before that.

Godbolt was also shot sometime before his arrest, and authorities took him to a local hospital for treatment.
