I won't give up until I get a job, says sign waver

A MAN who has been standing outside Hervey Norman at Eli Waters Shopping Centre for the past two months with a cardboard sign looking for work says he is not going to give up.

Graham Smyth said was adamant persistence would beat resistance.

"I'm here day after day in the freezing cold, before sun up. I've been called a prostitute and a loser but I'm staying here until someone gives me a job," he said.

A fitter-machinist by trade, Mr Smyth has been a safety adviser for Shell and done labouring, concreting and trawler work. He can also touch type, and has a heavy rigid truck licence.

"A couple of people have stopped and one guy offered me a job as a truck driver but the work's gone really slow for him and he couldn't put me on," Mr Smyth said.

"I also had a call a few days ago from a guy who owns a termite business. He said he was going to call me next week for a possible one-off small contract job, which I'm excited about, but I'm still hoping for a more stable job."

Mr Smyth lives on $73 a fortnight and only eats once a day.

"I don't have much money left after paying off the bills," he said. "I survive on two-minute noodles and I know every flavour there is."
