GOLD Coast veteran Gary Ablett doesn't mind playing at the MCG.

He also doesn't mind playing against Hawthorn.

The superstar midfielder dominated the Hawks in an 86-point victory in Round 3 and was again at his superb best as the Suns saw off a late fightback on Saturday afternoon.

Ablett had 37 disposals, 10 tackles, eight clearances and kicked two goals as Gold Coast held its nerve late in the contest to win by 16 points.

"They did make us earn it," Ablett told Fox Footy after the match.

"We didn't make the most of our opportunities, I felt they beat us around the stoppages and they threw a few tricks in.

"For us to take the next step, we need to win these games on the road. This is a good confidence booster for our young group."

Ablett had 36 disposals, 10 clearances and kicked two goals in Gold Coast's victory over Hawthorn earlier in the season, but stressed the importance of his teammates in Saturday's win.

Young forward Peter Wright was at the centre of his praise after booting two goals from 10 marks at the MCG, including the match-sealing major late in the game.

"He's been fantastic," Ablett said.

"Not just when he's marking it, but he gives our small forwards an opportunity by making a contest and that's all we want from him.

"We're super proud of his efforts today."
