ACCC: Be careful of portable pools

AS FAMILIES head to the shops for the festive season, they should be careful about the potential hazards of portable pools, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says.

The Commission on Friday warned parents of the hazards as the small, often blow-up pools are a popular choice over summer.

It comes after a Royal Life Saving Society report revealed children under five accounted for almost half of all swimming pool drowning deaths last financial year.

ACCC deputy chairwoman Delia Rickard said inflatable and portable pools were not usually fenced, and children could drown in seconds, even in shallow water.

"Adults must always actively supervise children from within arm's reach when they are in and around water," she said.

"Never rely on older children to supervise younger children, no matter how confident you are about their ability to watch the younger child."

Under new rules for pool manufacturers, portable pools packaging will require safety warning labels from March next year.Safety tips:

Always empty smaller pools when not in use.

Always store portable pools safely away from young children when not in use.

Store the pool to prevent small amounts of water being collected in the pool due to rain or nearby sprinklers.

Ensure larger inflatable or portable pools are surrounded by a swimming pool fence.

Consult your local council for fencing requirements.

Always actively supervise children from within arm's reach when they are in and around the water.

Never rely on older children to supervise younger children, no matter how confident you are about their ability to watch the younger child.
