Accused knife-wielding armed robber refused bail

A 22-YEAR-OLD man accused of trying to hold up three Toowoomba businesses while armed with a knife in one night has been refused bail and remanded in custody.

Trevor William Cordwell appeared in custody before Toowoomba Magistrates Court yesterday charged with the armed robbery of Berny's on West fish and chip shop and the attempted armed robberies of the Gowrie Road Hotel and Domino's Pizza in Wyalla on Sunday night.

Police claim Cordwell had reached over the counter and grabbed money from the till at the West St fish and chip shop about 6.30pm before fleeing.

It also alleged he then moved on to the Gowrie Road Hotel in Bridge St and later Domino's Pizza but his demands for cash at both businesses were refused and he had left empty handed.

Each time it was alleged he had wielded a knife and threatened staff.

Cordwell was arrested by police on Herries St about midnight on Sunday and had remained in custody in the Toowoomba Police Station watch house until his case was finally able to be mentioned before the court yesterday.

Cordwell's solicitor Kyna Morice applied for bail, telling the court her client had been living with a friend in Harristown and was willing to abide by stringent bail conditions including reporting to police daily, abiding by residential and curfew conditions and having no contact with complainants.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Mike Robinson said police objected to bail.

Magistrate Damian Carroll said in the police written objection to bail material it was claimed Cordwell upon his arrest had told officers he had been homeless, unemployed and using drugs.

Mr Carroll refused bail and remanded Cordwell in custody with the case next to be mentioned back in the same court on July 13.
