WHAT a difference a week makes.

Last weekend, talented University centre Adriaan Meiring was catching a cold on the wing for the Central Queensland side at the Graincorp Queensland Country Championships at Rugby Park.

On Saturday the talented youngster was in the thick of the action as University registered a 15-10 win over Frenchville in a fiery Central Queensland Rugby Union A-grade Round 6 contest at CQUniversity's Ian Coome Oval.

Playing at inside centre, Meiring scored a double during the first half of University's five-point win after finishing off two long-range solo efforts. He was then at the centre of an ugly brawl which erupted during the second half.

Taking a quick tap, Meiring allegedly copped a high tackle from Frenchville's Nathan Titmus before both teams came to blows after an altercation on the ground.

Frenchville's Todd Titmus and Matthew Brown were red-carded, while University and Central Queensland Brahmans forward Clinton Fullager was also sent from the field.

The trio spent the final 15 minutes on the sidelines and are expected to be suspended for at least two matches.

University coach Lachlan McMurtrie said the brawl, which left Frenchville with 13 on the field and University with 12, combined with the wet weather, ensured the match never reached any great heights. "The match deteriorated into a bit of a slugfest after that," said McMurtrie, who was without skipper Rupert Collins.

"Their forwards did a very good job of slowing the ball down at the breakdown, and they didn't give our backs much of an opportunity to attack."

Speedster Ashley Kris latched on to a cross field kick to score Frenchville's second try while Brown made the most of his opportunities with the ball to score the opening try of the match.

University's fourth win of the season sees them sitting in third place behind competition leaders Gladstone and Colts, who both managed wins on the weekend.
