Demetriou: AFL is not paying James Hird
AFL: Suspended Essendon coach James Hird is not being paid by the club or the AFL for the 12 months he is scheduled to spend on the sidelines.
That assertion was contained in a letter sent to all 18 AFL clubs yesterday by chief executive Andrew Demetriou in response to a report in News Limited papers.
The report suggested Hird was offered "sweeteners", including being given full pay for the duration of any suspension, in exchange for dropping his legal action and accepting the resultant penalty.
"Some of the coverage by News Limited today appears to assert the AFL has paid or is paying James Hird, which is completely false," the letter said.
Demetriou also spoke on radio station 3AW, saying: "I have no knowledge of what he's being paid outside of the Essendon Football Club, but he is not permitted to be paid by the Essendon Football Club - that is a fact."
