Suns captain Gary Ablett wants to re-sign Hunt

GOLD Coast Suns captain Gary Ablett says if it was up to him, code-hopper Karmichael Hunt would re-sign with the club.

Injuries and the improvement of the team's younger players has restricted Hunt to just one game this season - against Sydney in round 12 - but Ablett said the 27-year-old's contribution to the club should not be underestimated.

"He's been fantastic for the younger guys. He's a super-hard trainer and just sets a good example," the dual Brownlow medalist said.

"Hopefully, as it gets towards the end of the year, he re-signs and will stay here for a few years to come."

Meanwhile, Melbourne has won the battle for the signature of highly-rated young forward Jesse Hogan.

Yet to make his debut with the club due to a back injury, the Demons yesterday agreed to a two-year contract extension for the 19-year-old West Australian until the end of the 2017 season.
