Swimmer smashes PB, but misses out on butterfly final

8.20am: ROCKHAMPTON swimmer Alanna Bowles has missed out on a medal chance overnight in the 200m butterfly event.

Alanna came third in Heat 2 with a time of 2:12.31, but it wasn't enough to secure a place in the final.

3am: COACH Shane Kingston could not have been prouder as he watched Rockhampton swimmer Alanna Bowles compete at the Commonwealth Games.

In what Shane described as an "absolutely fantastic job", Alanna finished second in her 800m freestyle heat to qualify third fastest overall for the final. Alanna smashed her personal best time by four seconds, finishing in a time of 8:25.19.

Kingston, who is in contact with Alanna's Glasgow coaches, said the swimmer was nervous before the race.

Speaking to The Morning Bulletin before Alanna's 200m butterfly heat last night, Kingston said she should be more confident going into that and the 800m freestyle final.

"I think she'll take pure confidence out of that swim," Kingston said.

Kingston said Alanna had "the best preparation" in the lead up to the Games.

He said the confidence she had after making the team made training better, with Alanna swimming harder and recovering faster.

Whatever the outcome, Kingston could not be happier with Alanna's performance.

"(The Commonwealth Games) is a massive milestone for her swimming career, my coaching career and Rockhampton swimming," Kingston said.

He said it was an "absolute privilege" to coach Alanna. Watch The Morning Bulletin's website for the results of the races.
