Alarm over video about dangers of barge-to-ship coal loading

THE dangers of barge-to-ship coal loading, known as transshipping, have been exposed in a video released by GetUp.

Following the video's release, the Keppel and Fitzroy Delta Alliance is calling for an immediate moratorium on all port developments in the Fitzroy Delta and Keppel Bay proposed for the exposed waters of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

KAFDA spokeswoman Ginny Gerlach said the video illustrated the dangers of transshipping.

"We have surveyed our community and 92% of people are already extremely concerned about this proposal. These disturbing images of children playing on coal-covered beaches show what our future would be if this goes ahead," Ms Gerlach said.

Ms Gerlach urged the government to step in and protect the area permanently.
